“RABBITS” for Pet Ideas

In need of an amazing pet, interactive as a puppy yet not so demanding. Bunnies are exactly what you need.

Though unfortunately most people in Nigeria are yet to be aware of how wonderful lot a rabbit could be as a pet as well as a business but if you read this article to this point, then you are pretty sure, this was made for you.

Rabbits make great pets for children. However, they are fragile and young children should not handle them. They can accidentally cause injury picking the rabbit, by squeezing too tightly, or dropping them. Children should always be supervised when interacting with and, in the case of older children, handling rabbits.

Bunnies are quiet.

If you live in an apartment building or have nearby neighbors, animal sounds can be a big concern. Generally, though, rabbits make little to no noise. The fact that bunnies are so quiet is also great if you’re a light sleeper and your rabbit decides he’s really a night owl.

Rabbits have personality plus.

People who have never had a rabbit as a pet don’t realize that rabbits actually have very distinct personalities. These animals can be charming, affectionate and very interactive

Rabbits generally live for 5 to 8 years depending on their environment and breed, but they can live for as long as 12 years. If you decide to purchase a rabbit, make sure you are prepared to care for them that long.

Rabbits bond closely with their owners.

Ask any bunny owner who interacts regularly with his pet and he’ll tell you that, just like dogs or cats, rabbits get to know their owners well. They recognize them by voice and sight and will even come on command. Bunnies may even follow their owners from room to room and jump up on their laps when called.

Rabbits need less space than other pets.

If you live in a small house or apartment and you’re looking for a cuddly pet who doesn’t require a lot of space and doesn’t need to be walked, a rabbit may be right for you. They don’t need much room – unlike other pets, rabbits are happy in their cage during the day with a little roaming-around time at night. “Rabbits can be very affectionate and they are generally clean, easy to toilet train and love to explore,”

Rabbits are easily trained.

Bunnies can be trained not only to use a litterbox, but also to run through obstacle courses and to do tricks. Using the principles of positive reinforcement training, rabbit owners can encourage their pets to learn certain behaviors by repeatedly rewarding them with special treats when they perform these behaviors.

Housing/caring and Feeding your rabbits

Rabbits require a hutch to live in that is safe from predators, such as dogs and cats. It needs an area that protects them from the weather and has enough space for exercise. Rabbits should not be placed in pens or wired floor hutches, it is bad for their feet.

Rabbits are social species and prefer to live in groups. If you decide to own a rabbit, always have at least 2 rabbits. However, if you don’t have the room or time or money to keep two rabbits you will need to become your rabbit’s companion. This means that if you are away for long periods (more than 4 hours every day) you will need to provide your rabbit with enrichment activities and toys to keep them occupied and prevent them from becoming lonely or suffering from stress.

Feeding your rabbit
Rabbits are herbivores and only eat plant material. Their natural diet consists generally of young leaves from:

-plants or bushes

-grasses

-weeds

-sometimes the bark from bushes and trees.

Rabbits need to eat small amounts frequently. Approximately 30 feeds, of 2 to 8g of food, each day is normal. Pet rabbits must be fed a high fibre diet to help maintain their body and teeth health.

It is natural for rabbits to:

-chew on things (it keeps their teeth in good health)

-thump their back feet

-play with objects.

Contact your vet if you notice a rapid change in your rabbit’s behaviour such as:

hiding

aggression when you try to touch or pick them up

excessive cage or object chewing

over grooming

So when next you feel like you need a pet for keeps that has got all the positive attraction and attribute. You know which to go for without a second thought.
