The topic of discussion today, has not always been in practice and can be considered as recent. About 2020, some cars were spotted having worn a bag over their mirrors especially when traveling alone, and this practice seem to be on the rise and we were forced to answer pressing questions that have frequent our ears and eyes. So, why put bags over car mirrors when traveling alone?
Beliefs Why People Put Bags Over Car Mirrors When Traveling Alone
- To shield off prying eyes from seeing the interior of your car, especially when carrying valuable items and triggering theft.
- To shield direct sunlight reflections from your eyes and being prone to a sunburn
- To keep dirt and debris away from your mirrors and blurring your vision
- To shield off headlight glares from from cars behind you
- Block incoming light from light poles etc., when parked for a nap
- To hide objects that may fall into your car while driving.
The reasons listed above are mostly based on personal beliefs than actual proof. Because, not all listed reasons actually justify sensibly and safely why one should put a bag over their vehicle.
Rather, it is a lot more likely that the lapses below may retard the above beliefs and render it a little less unreasonable or make efforts thwarted.
- Snow actually does not get stuck to moving cars and neither does ice. Which is why, putting a bag over your side mirrors can only help if the car is in a static position but does not if it’s in motion. But, it is reasonable if the car is parked as it may help protect the mirrors. Most states have laws that insists you need to have a clear field of vision when driving and covering your mirrors with plastic bags when driving may impede that requirement. One reason given for this trick is to keep snow and ice off your side mirrors. If you grew up in an era where cars did not have heated side mirrors, then you understand the importance of this trick. It saves you a little work and protects the mirror from freezing and cracking.
- Putting a bag over your side mirrors doesn’t quite keep your interiors away from perky eyes, to see if you have valuables there. Between, your car have 6 other windows that are a lot larger than your side mirrors, you can’t really keep prying eyes off, except 4 of those happen to be tinted. So, it is best if your reason for having a bag over your car mirrors are anything else other than this.
- Some RV owners say they do this when they are parked to keep the birds from landing on the mirror, looking at themselves and thinking there is another bird in front of them. When they see that image, the birds tend to peck at it. Their sharp beaks can break your mirror. Putting a bag over your car mirror helps stop that from taking place. But again, this is done when car is parked, not when it is in motion.
- Another reason would be to keep the sun from reflecting back into the living area of your RV and causing annoying light distractions.
Care Tips for your Car Mirrors
- Ice is hazardous during winter especially on cars—It’s always best to park in your garage to prevent ice from forming on your windshield and rearview mirrors.
- You can cover Ziplock bags, to prevent UV rays, to avoid the sun from shortening lifespan of their personal and expensive items.
- Also, slip few Ziplock bags over your mirrors to help with covering ice and snow from sticking, making those frigid mornings less frustrating and help protect them from freezing and cracking.
